ABDUR RAHMAN CHUGHTAI – ‘MURAQQA-I-CHUGHTAI ‘ (BKS 1070)
Reference Code: BKS 1070
Out of stock
This is the first edition of the first book ever to be published by famed artist Abdur Rahman Chughtai: ‘Muraqqa-i-Chughtai’. An introduction by James H. Cousins is followed by a Foreword by Dr. Sir Mohammad Iqbal and the complete text of the Diwan-i-Ghalib.
Initially published in 1928 in Lahore by Jahangir Book Club, the book contains 26 plates and 8 other illustrations. Later editions changed or omitted the illustrations found in this first edition, making it an important addition to any Chughtai collection.
The book is in good condition for its age. There is much fraying and bumping to the board edges, corners and spine ends, with a piece of the spine strip missing from the bottom end. Gilt titling is fades, but still bright. Internal tape repair has been done to the binding on the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. The text block is uneven, probably due to this repair. There is foxing throughout and some fraying to page edges. Two tissue guards are torn, and another has pieces missing. One page has a 1-inch tear at the top. But it is difficult to find a copy in as good condition as this, for the binding is solid, the illustrations all present, and the book free of internal scribbling and wormholing.
