AMAL-I CHUGHTAI/IQBAL-POET OF THE EAST BY ABDUR RAHMAN CHUGHTAI
One of the highlights of our collection, this is a signed and limited edition of ‘Amal-i Chughtai/Iqbal-Poet of the East’, by famed artist Abdur Rahman Chughtai.
This massive book features the poetry of Muhammad Iqbal in Urdu and Persian with accompanying illustrations by Chughtai. However, each plate has some accompanying descriptive text and a quote from Iqbal in English. It contains about 450 pages, including 40 tipped-in colour plates, two dozen photogravures, and several plates of calligraphic design. The book was printed in Lahore in 1968 at Nisar Art Press, though the plates were engraved and printed in England.
The dustjacket has some creases, chipping around the edges and the occasional small tear but is clean. The plates on the front and back are in good condition, though there is a tiny hole in one of them. The inside flaps of the dustjackets have some foxing, and some parts of the endpapers have been rubbed off. There is foxing on numerous pages, as well as to the page edges. The silk ribbon bookmark is present but detached. But the binding is solid, and there are no inscriptions, no tears, no bent plates, and no major markings except those naturally occurring from the printing process. Overall, this copy is in very good condition. The book is approximately 11.3 inches wide, 14 inches tall, and 2.3 inches thick.
This is number 64 of 275 copies. The differences between this book and the standard ‘Amal-i Chughtai’ is that the limited edition has a more elaborate design on the boards, is printed on vellum (thus making it thicker), has top edges gilt, has two extra plates attached to the dustjacket, and, of course, is signed by Chughtai.
