Although Argus is a name that is relatively infrequent in the camera company histories, yet it gained fame for its Argus C3 which was aptly named as ‘Brick’ for its sturdy made. The company was founded in 1936 in Michigan, as a subsidiary to the International Radio Corporation which was known for producing Bakelite radios. The idea was then implemented on cameras, as well, by the president Charles Verschoor and 35 mm Bakelite camera was produced. It succeeded in producing low cost 35 mm camera Argus A. The company was sold to Sylvania and stopped the production of cameras altogether in 1969.
Presented here is the Argo Argoflex camera which was produced from 1940 to 1948. It was an art-deco type bakelite made model with twin-lens reflex and gear-focusing front element made for 620 film. This particular camera is a post- World War II camera because it has a small decorative circle, whereas the earlier models had a small knob below the viewfinder. The lens is coated 3-element Argus Varex 75 mm, f 4.5.
This particular camera is present in an exceptional condition with no apparent damage. It comes with a casing made of top grain cow hide and a tripod stand.
This art-deco style camera can be used for the décor of a studio, shop or apartment. It adds a touch of photographic taste, style and antiquity to the interior. The shape and finishing is remarkable, which makes this camera a must-have for collectors.
