Description
A handsome 20th century nautical antique, this Plath Geomar binnacle stand and compass was salvaged off a defunct old ship and polished to its former glory.
The octagonal stand is made of solid teak wood and bears the original marker’s plaque on the front with the iconic Plath “Sun Shooter” logo figure. According to the plaque, this Plath Geomar was manufactured for Unilux S. L. of Madrid. On the front, it also features a tube inclinometer (without the tube) with elegant gold-painted buckles. There is an external brass Flinders bar on the back. Brass brackets hold up two painted quadrennial (compensating) spheres.
The gimbaled compass bears the mark “Cassens & Plath” (with the number “A^69302” inscribed underneath) and the triangular logo from Cassens pre-buyout days. Based on this, we can reasonably expect this was made in 1962 or at some point after it.
All in all, this is an exceptionally well-preserved rare nautical antique that should be of interest to the serious collector. It would also make an elegant gift.
