Description

An extremely rare booklet titled “Caves at Kanheri”, signed by the author R. G. Gyani.

This 12-page booklet by the Assistant Curator of the Prince of Wales Museum in Bombay has no publication date, but the author’s gift inscription at the top is dated 1939. In addition to 12 pages of text discussing Brahmanical and Buddhistic caves in the environs of Bombay, the essay contains 6 pages of photographs of sculptures and other examples of ancient Indian art and iconography.

This booklet is rare enough that cannot be found in either the Library of Congress or the British Library- the two largest libraries in the world. It is in rough condition. Tears and frays mark the soft cardboard covers, which are partly detached from the main text. Internally there is some wormholing and foxing, but the booklet is perfectly readable. The double binding indicates that it seems to have been rebound or reinforced at some point in its history.
