A magnificent addition to our vintage collection is the traditional Chinese paper umbrella.
A magnificent addition to our vintage collection is the traditional Chinese paper umbrella. It is known that they originated from China about three centuries ago, when they started making paper and silk umbrellas. They are a true work of art as their frames are usually built from mulberry bark or bamboo, They are beautifully painted by Chinese artisans with a variety of designs like sceneries from their mythology, floral patterns, landscapes, nature, animals, dragons, etc. They were traditionally limited to wealthy noble families and royalties.
These traditional umbrellas became an integral accessory for women, serving both as sun-shade and a fashion statement. They are also traditionally used as essential Chinese/Japanese wedding items, as props in traditional dances and tea ceremonies, they are also used as engagement presents, in bridal dowry and even funeral ceremonies. This tradition also extended across Asia, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand and Laos.
This particular umbrella has natural pattern with hand painted birds and trees with an off white base color and a ring around the wooden shaft for closing it. It is in excellent condition with a working collapsible extending shaft. It is indeed a beautiful item for your collection, as it can add an exotic Chinese touch to your lounge, restaurant, office, etc.
