GREAT MEN OF INDIA (BKS 1012)
Reference Code: BKS 1012
This 640-page book titled ‘Great Men of India’ is a collection of biographies written by various hands of numerous prominent figures throughout Indian history. Edited by L. F. Rushbrook Williams, with biographies composed by writers such as Ishwari Prasad, H. G. Rawlinson and Sardar K. M. Panikkar, the book is divided into eight sections, with treatments on a variety of personalities historical and modern: Buddha, Asoka, Kalidasa, Kabir, Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah, Iqbal, Tagore, and numerous Mughal rulers are just a few of the dozens of men featured in this volume. The book is heavily illustrated with photographs. It was published by The Home Library Club in India and is undated, but was probably released in 1939 (Jinnah is described as being “sixty-three years of age”). The book is approximately 6.3 inches wide, 9 inches tall, and 1.5 inches thick.
The book is in good condition. The boards and spine are rubbed along the edges and corners. The rear board exhibits one or two, almost invisible, wormholes, but these do not penetrate the board. Binding is solid, but slightly weak. Gilt titling to the spine is faded. Page edges exhibit foxing and stains. Internally the book is in fine shape: there is an ink inscription to the half-title, some minor pencilling, a few page bends, and the occasional smudge and foxing, but the book is largely clean throughout. A couple of pages have small, marginal tears.
