Description

Published circa 1962 by Heron Books (London) by arrangement with J. M. Dent & Sons, “Anna Karenina” is the first part of a 2-volume edition of Leo Tolstoy’s famous novel. This book was published as part of the 32-volume series “The Greatest Masterpieces of Russian Literature”. These were Collectors’ Editions specifically aimed towards budding collectors and avid readers looking for a good way to establish a comprehensive, high-quality library without the prohibitive cost.

This book is bound in hardback red faux leather with bright gilt engraving on the cover, tasteful golden-brown arabesque patterned endpapers and a yellow cord bookmark that feels like satin. It features illustrations (including a frontispiece) by Roland Topor throughout and has been translated from Russian by Rochelle S. Townsend. It also includes an introduction by Nicolay Andreyev, copyrighted 1958.

This book has 427 numbered pages in addition to the front matter, and is believed to be the first edition or first thus.

According to the colophon at the back, this volume was designed by William B. Taylor and printed on wood-free paper in Switzerland, before being bound by H. Weber AG of Winterthur.

“Anna Karenina” (Vol.1) is the perfect addition to a Heron Books library–or a great way to start one.

Condition: Almost like new–8/10. The covers and pages are clean, bright, and intact. However, there is some mild bumping on the right edge of the front cover, which is otherwise in perfect condition. There is some foxing on the fore-edges but none on the pages themselves. The book is slightly cocked but this should be reversible with proper care.
