Published circa 1967 by Heron Books (London) by arrangement with Secker and Warburg (who were the original publishers of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”) this book is a selection of short stories by Nikolai Leskov. Leskov is noted for his unique writing style and his evocative sketches of the Russian society of his time. He was greatly admired by other authors of the Russian literary canon, including Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekov, and Leo Tolstoy.
“Selected Tales” is bound in hardback red faux leather with bright gilt engraving on the cover, tasteful golden-brown arabesque patterned endpapers, and a yellow cord bookmark that feels like satin. It features illustrations (including a frontispiece) by Michael Tregenza throughout and has been translated from Russian by David Magarshack. It also includes an introduction by V. S. Pritchett.
This book has 302 numbered pages in addition to the front matter, and is believed to be the first edition or first thus.
According to the colophon at the back, this book was designed by William B. Taylor and printed in Switzerland.
“Selected Tales” was published as part of the 37-volume series “The Greatest Masterpieces of Russian Literature”. These were Collectors’ Editions specifically aimed towards budding collectors and avid readers looking for a good way to establish a comprehensive, high-quality library without the prohibitive cost. It is the perfect addition to a Heron Books library–or a great way to start one.
Condition: Almost like new–8.5/10. The covers and pages are clean, bright, intact, and the binding is tight. However, there is some mild bumping on the top edge of the front cover, which is otherwise in perfect condition. There is also some foxing on the fore-edges but none on the pages themselves, which are a very readable white.
