THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SULTAN MAHMUD OF GHAZANA BY MUHAMMAD NAZIM ( BKS 1045)
Reference Code: BKS 1045
‘The Life and Times of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna’, by Muhammad Nazim, is one of the few books to provide a detailed treatment on the Sultan. With an approving foreword by Sir Thomas Arnold (editor of ‘The Legacy of Islam’), and a dedication to Reynold A. Nicholson (translator of Rumi and author of ‘A Literary History of the Arabs’), the book is a notable work of scholarship, originally written as a PhD thesis.
The rare first edition was published by Cambridge University Press in 1931, and contains 270 pages. The book is approximately 6 inches wide, 8.7 inches tall, and 1.4 inches thick.
The book is in good condition. The binding is solid and the gilt titling and decoration is still bright. The boards have bumps and minor fraying around the edges and at the corners. The spine has a minor tear near the top. There is foxing to the page edges and to the internal pages, though this is mostly confined to the first and last pages. An owner’s inscription appears on the front free endpaper, which is also creased. The half-title is separating from the binding slightly near the bottom, and there is a small tear to the bottom of the title page. But the book is in good condition overall, with the main text free of tears and markings, and no loose pages. The map is present and in excellent shape.
