‘The Masterpiece Library of Short Stories- The Thousand Best Complete Tales of all Times and all Countries’, was selected by a board of critics including such people as Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and Sir Edmund Gosse. This edition of 10 double-volumes is undated, but was likely published in the early 20th century by The Educational Book Company Limited. Containing more than 7000 pages of literature, the set contains modern works from Russia, America, and Europe, as well as a number of ancient Greek, Indian, Hebrew, Chinese, Arabian, and Persian stories. M. Whackeray, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, William Morris, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jerome K. Jerome, H. G. Hoffmann, the Brothers Grimm, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Pedro A. de Alarcon, Miguel de Cervantes, Serafin E. Calderon, August Strindberg, Hans Christian Andersen, and hundreds of other writers both major and minor. Each volume is approximately 5.5 inches wide, 7.9 inches tall, and 1.5 inches thick,
The set is in good condition. Some of the volumes exhibit wear, scuff marks, and discolouration to the boards, while others have minor tears to the spine along with some fading to the gilt titling. Most volumes have foxing and scuffing to the page ends, as well as some page bends and sporadic light foxing internally. But the bindings for all books are solid, and all of the volumes are clean with no tears, scribbles, or other major flaws.
