‘POET OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ‘- W. H. AUDEN AND NORMAN HOLMES PEARSON (BKS 1030)

This is a complete 5-volume set titled ‘Poets of the English Language’, part of the Viking Portable Library series. Containing major English poems from the 14th century to the 20th by dozens of poets, the set was edited by W. H. Auden and Norman Holmes Pearson, with emendations of texts and glosses by E. Talbot Donaldson. These books were published in 1950 in New York by The Viking Press. Each volume is approximately 4.5 inches wide, 6.6 inches tall, and 1.1 inches thick. Pagination is as follows:

The books are in good condition. The volumes are missing their dustjackets. The boards have some scuff marks, rubbing, creases, and fraying along the edges. Corners are slightly bent and the spines are slightly faded. The bindings for all the volumes are sound. Page edges exhibit some stains. Internally there are some page bends, some mild foxing, some pencil underlining, and old bookseller stamps to the front free endpapers. One volume has an ink inscription to the front free endpaper; another volume has inking to the rear free endpaper. Overall, the books are in decent shape with no major defects.
