‘TEMPLES AND ELEPHANTS’- CARL BOCK (BKS 1024)
Reference Code: BKS 1024
Offered here is a very rare book: ‘Temples and Elephants: The Narrative of a Journey of Exploration Through Upper Siam and Lao’, by the Norwegian explorer Carl Bock. This is a first edition, published in 1884 by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington. 16 pages of prefatory matter are followed by 438 pages of text. The book contains dozens of illustrations, including two coloured plates, and a map. It is approximately 6.3 inches wide, 9.1 inches tall, and 1.5 inches thick.
The book is in fair condition. The boards exhibit much scuffing, staining, and fraying, with tears to the corners. Gilt titling is fading. The binding is solid, though one of the tissue guards is partly detached. Page edges display extensive foxing, and some of the pages are marginally chipped at the beginning of the book. The front free endpaper is missing. Internally the book is in much better shape. There are some water stains to the front and rear endpapers, but the main text itself has only a few smudges. Some of the tissue guards have creases and tears, but the main pages are free of major defects. Despite its flaws, this book is very difficult to find in better condition.
