This is a beautifully crafted, quality of an antique Binnacle Compass.  Originally, these helmet compasses were intended for use on lifeboats.
A polished brass case with a round glass window surrounds the Gimbaled Binnacle Compass. It also features a built-in oil lamp on the side that can illuminate the compass.  The air-damped compass card has a solid brass enclosure and is fully gasketed.

Binnacle compass: Traditional purpose of the binnacle was to hold the ship’s magnetic compass, mounted in gimbals to keep it level while the ship pitched and rolled.
